Is Your Pool Filter Clean & Ready for Winter?

The Pool Man, Inc. wants to remind you that it is important to make sure your pool filter is clean before the end of the season.

Think of the pool filter like a filter in a vacuum, if it’s all clogged and dirty, efficiency will go down and things won’t get sucked up. But unlike a vacuum, this is a more costly fix should something not work, so keeping the pool filter clean is one of the most effective ways that your pool will operate at its best.

Contact us today to schedule your end of year pool filter clean, to ensure your pool is running at its best even through the winter months.

Pool Maintenance Tip, Pool Service Company in Houston, The Pool Man, Inc.

pool skimmer
Have you skimmed the pool and cleaned out the baskets today? One of the simplest ways to keep a pool looking good and functioning well is to get rid of the most evident debris.

According to the experts, skimming the pool every few days helps the efficiency of the pool’s circulation system — think about it, everything you don’t get eventually sinks to the bottom and could find it’s way into the filter — and may lower chlorine use.

Be sure to empty the skimmer baskets every few days, too, and dump out anything caught in there with a few shakes or spray it with the hose.

Remember, if you do not have the time or inclination to clean your pool, skimmer or filter, contact the pool maintenance team at The Pool Man, Inc. for complete information on our pool maintenance services.

Swimming Pool Water Testing Tips from Houston Pool Builder, The Pool Man, Inc.

testing pool water, pool water testing kit
The Houston weather is getting warmer and swimming pools are getting more use.  As summer rolls around, testing your swimming pool water should become a routine part of your week, and a basic at-home testing kit is easy to come by. Here are a few testing tips from the professionals to get the most accurate results.
  • The best time to test the pool water is at dusk.
  • Make sure to choose an area of the pool where water does not come back from the filter, preferably the deep end and submerse the kit elbow deep.
  • When you open your kit, be sure not to drop any water on the testing strips as they will become contaminated.
  • Wait at least four hours after swimmers have left before you test the water.
  • Wait at least eight to 12 hours after a rain or windstorm before you test the water.
  • Weekends aren’t the best time to test as neighbors mow their lawn or fertilize and if it’s in the air, it can affect your reading.
  • If you have a normal pH reading for three weeks and suddenly get a high or low reading, wait 24 hours and test again. If it’s the same reading then, adjust accordingly.
  • Test your water at same time of day each time you use your kit.
  • Run the pump at least one hour before testing the water.
Please remember these helpful tips when testing your swimming pool water.  If you do not have the time to maintain your swimming pool, The Pool Man, Inc. offers pool maintenance service in Houston, Tomball, Spring, Magnolia and surrounding areas.  Contact us today for more information on our pool maintenance services. Pool Maintenance Tip – Understanding Pool Chlorine, from your Houston Pool Service provider

Combined Chlorine (chloramines)

Combined chlorine occurs when free available chlorine combines with ammonia or other nitrogen containing contaminants present in the pool water. Combined chlorine (or chloramine) is not an effective sanitizer for pool water applications. Combined chlorine can contribute to cloudy water, chlorine odor and eye irritation. They only way to test for combined chlorine is to test for total chlorine and free chlorine, then subtract free chlorine from total chlorine to determine the combined chlorine level.

Total Chlorine – Free Chlorine = Combined Chlorine

Removal of combined chlorine is achieved through a process known as “breakpoint”. To achieve breakpoint by chlorination, 10ppm of free chlorine must be added for every 1ppm of chloramine. This is an “all or nothing” process. The entire amount of the specific type of chlorine chosen must be added in order to reach “breakpoint”.

Please contact our pool service department for more information.
