Swimming Pool Water Testing Tips from Houston Pool Builder, The Pool Man, Inc.

testing pool water, pool water testing kit
The Houston weather is getting warmer and swimming pools are getting more use.  As summer rolls around, testing your swimming pool water should become a routine part of your week, and a basic at-home testing kit is easy to come by. Here are a few testing tips from the professionals to get the most accurate results.
  • The best time to test the pool water is at dusk.
  • Make sure to choose an area of the pool where water does not come back from the filter, preferably the deep end and submerse the kit elbow deep.
  • When you open your kit, be sure not to drop any water on the testing strips as they will become contaminated.
  • Wait at least four hours after swimmers have left before you test the water.
  • Wait at least eight to 12 hours after a rain or windstorm before you test the water.
  • Weekends aren’t the best time to test as neighbors mow their lawn or fertilize and if it’s in the air, it can affect your reading.
  • If you have a normal pH reading for three weeks and suddenly get a high or low reading, wait 24 hours and test again. If it’s the same reading then, adjust accordingly.
  • Test your water at same time of day each time you use your kit.
  • Run the pump at least one hour before testing the water.

Pool Maintenance Tip – Understanding Pool Chlorine, from your Houston Pool Service provider

Combined Chlorine (chloramines)

Combined chlorine occurs when free available chlorine combines with ammonia or other nitrogen containing contaminants present in the pool water. Combined chlorine (or chloramine) is not an effective sanitizer for pool water applications. Combined chlorine can contribute to cloudy water, chlorine odor and eye irritation. They only way to test for combined chlorine is to test for total chlorine and free chlorine, then subtract free chlorine from total chlorine to determine the combined chlorine level.

Total Chlorine – Free Chlorine = Combined Chlorine

Removal of combined chlorine is achieved through a process known as “breakpoint”. To achieve breakpoint by chlorination, 10ppm of free chlorine must be added for every 1ppm of chloramine. This is an “all or nothing” process. The entire amount of the specific type of chlorine chosen must be added in order to reach “breakpoint”.

The Importance of Proper Pool Water Chemistry Balance, from your Houston Pool Builder, The Pool Man, Inc.

We all know having a clean pool is important while swimming in our pools, but did you know that a clean looking pool can be chemically unbalanced?  Chemically balanced pool water is important for the following reasons :

1.) Prevent Disease

2.) Protect Equipment

3.) Provide the expected environment

Sanitizers are more effective in water that is properly balanced. Balanced water is more comfortable for swimmers because it reduces unpleasant odor, burning eyes & itchy skin. Balanced water will also help prevent equipment corrosion &/ or scale build up. Improperly balanced water can become cloudy & unappealing for swimmers.

How can I prevent Algae from growing in my pool? Tip for Pool Service, Houston Pool Builder

Algae growth is a common problem & some experts have suggested an effective solution is to remove phosphates from the water. The belief is that this action takes away a food source, reducing algae problems or even killing it (by starvation). It is important to note that phosphate-removing products are NOT EPA approved or registered as algae killers (algaecides) or algae inhibitors (algaestats).

Recent studies performed on algae growth related to phosphates have actually shown that an algae-free pool can be easily maintained even in the presence of 20,000 ppb of phosphates. These pools simply maintained 1-3 ppm of FAC and were treated with routine additions of a preventative algaecide.

Pool Service Tips from your Houston Pool Builder & Service provider, The Pool Man, Inc.

Some simple tips to help make things easy around your pool equipment:
  • Always stand clear of the pool filter when you start your system up. Pump pressure can cause the tank to expand and if the clamp(s) are loose there is a potential for the lid to come off.
  • Keep records of your pressure readings on the pressure gauges. This will help tell you when the pool filter needs cleaning and will help your technician diagnose problems with the system.
  • Check your system for leaks – catching leaks early can save hundreds of dollars later.
  • If you have questions about how your pool equipment operates – give us a call, we are always ready to help you with information on your equipment.
