Pool Renovations: 5 Reasons To Replace Tile When You Replaster Your Pool

With over 30 years of industry experience, our Renovation Manager Laurie Barry knows everything there is to know about pools - inside and out.  From Service and Maintenance, to Design, New Construction and Renovations, she is a true Pool Industry Expert.  Here, she shares with us some tips on Pool Remodeling that some homeowners may not think of: Why you should replace your waterline tile when you replaster your pool.

1. Cost and Labor Efficiency: It is significantly cheaper and easier to replace tile while the pool is already drained and undergoing major work. Doing them separately later often requires additional draining and repetitive labor costs.

2. Aesthetic Continuity: Tile and plaster go "hand in hand". If you wait until after plastering to tile, you risk chipping the new plaster at the base of the tile line. Any subsequent patches to fix that damage rarely match the original finish exactly.

3. Risk of Damage: During the "chip out" process of removing old plaster, existing tiles can be accidentally broken or loosened. Finding matching replacement tiles for older designs can be extremely difficult.

4. Watertight Integrity: Tiles protect the pool structure from sun and chemical exposure at the waterline, where plaster is most prone to cracking. Replacing them together ensures a flush, waterproof seal between the new surface and the tile line.

5. Structural Inspection: Removing both layers allows contractors to inspect the underlying concrete shell for leaks, hollow spots, or structural issues that might be hidden behind aging tiles.
