Your Pool Renovation: What to Expect When the Unexpected Happens

When it comes to pool renovations, homeowners are often excited to see their backyard oasis transformed with fresh materials, upgraded features, and modern equipment. But like any remodeling project, pool renovations can sometimes reveal hidden surprises beneath the surface. At The Pool Man, we believe in being upfront about these possibilities so you know exactly what to expect if the unexpected comes up.

Common Surprises During Pool Renovations

  • Broken Plumbing Lines & Skimmers
Once we’ve drained your pool, we pressure-test all the plumbing to confirm it’s in good shape. Sometimes this testing reveals broken or leaking pipes that need to be replaced. While this may not have been obvious beforehand, addressing it during renovation prevents future water loss and costly repairs. Also, when breaking out old decking to replace it with updated materials, it’s possible to crack underground PVC pipes or skimmers. Avoiding these occurrences is always our goal, but unfortunately it isn’t always an attainable goal. Repairing any broken lines and skimmers will ensure your pool system runs properly and prevents leaks down the road.
  • Cracks & Faults in the Gunite Structure
Sometimes when chipping out old plaster, we uncover cracked gunite beams, or we find that the original gunite was applied too thin. These issues must be addressed and corrected to preserve the strength and longevity of your pool.
  • Outdated or Unusable Equipment
Older pools often have equipment that’s no longer compatible with modern upgrades or additional features. For example, if you’re adding new water features or energy-efficient systems, your existing pump or filter may need to be replaced.
  • Electrical Not Up to Code
A lot of times we find that the electrical wiring for the pool and/or pool lights isn’t up to today’s code. Not only does this prevent your pool from passing potential inspections, but it can also create real safety concerns for you and your family. Bringing your electrical up to code ensures your pool is not only functional but also safe.

Our Process: Transparency at Every Step

When these surprises come up, our team won’t move forward without you. We’ll:

  1. Explain what we found – showing you the issue and describing why it matters.
  2. Provide clear solutions – outlining the repair or upgrade options available.
  3. Get your approval first – before performing any additional work, so there are no hidden costs or surprises on your end.

Uncovering these challenges during a renovation might feel frustrating at first, but fixing them now protects your investment and ensures your pool is safe, reliable, and built to last for years to come. Our commitment is to give you not just a beautiful pool, but one with the solid foundation and equipment it needs to perform at its best.
